formed in 2006, after being set up on a musical blind date, the knot has pursued an exploration of both the cello and the medium of improvisation.
our aim has been to cultivate an inclusive and fluid sound which both embraces and scrutinizes various conventions on the instrument. this includes the cello’s default lyricism, canonized extended techniques, “bad” technique (moves cribbed from amateurs), and approaches transposed from other musical traditions and instruments. accordingly, we regularly employ various sorts of mutes, preparations and sounding tools (mallets, plectra, kitchen utensils, vibrators) to achieve different but entirely acoustic sounds. we're not afraid, though, of settling into a nice cantabile passage either.
while our music is created through improvisation, we don’t put stock in the idea of a genreless “creative” music. our approach welcomes textures and gestures from folk musics, classical musics, rock, and various experimental traditions.
tidewrack displays an array of possibilities within our approach. bookended by two longer pieces from a completely spontaneous live set (at kyle brenders' inbetween series in toronto, april 2013), the inner three pieces were generated in a vaguely more compositional manner, intentionally focusing on a narrower set of material or parameters
